How inspiring are the people around you?

The people we surround ourselves with can be the source of our greatest inspiration and growth. What type of people do you have in your own inner circle? Make a list of the 10 people you spend the most time with. Now quickly label each person as an "inspiring" or "conspiring" personality. Inspiring people take you out of your current thinking into a new, bigger place. Conspiring people are happy to support you and help you stay where you are. What is your personal inspire-to-conspire ratio? Does it support who you want to be?

We can increase our personal and professional success by involving the right people at the right time in our lives. Feel "stuck", with little choice about who is in your circle today? Just bringing in one new personality to your existing mix can fuel change. Choose to balance your loving (and not so loving!) co-conspirators with new, inspiring additions to your life. Determine what area of your life would benefit from some stimulation and inject someone new into it.

Coaching Challenge

Consider how adding one inspiring personality to your personal or professional mix could solve a problem you are having today. Go create your own "circle of inspiration"!

Answer these questions about yourself: What would inspire you to take on a new challenge this year? Who could provide that inspiration in your life? What messages, negative and positive are you getting about this challenge today? Design two inspirational experiences that will move you forward into your new challenge.

"You can't wait for inspiration. You have to go after it with a club." ~ Jack London

"Why do you search for inspiration from the uninspired? Would you seek lilies among field briar?"

Tips for increasing your inspiration quotient:

  • Do you need to change the paradigm at work? Add a creative thinker to your team. Their energy and out-of-the-box perspective will get your ideas flowing.
  • Are your circumstances getting you down? Rub elbows with upbeat people who won't listen to complaints. It is hard to stay a victim amidst the optimists.
  • Has your business reached a plateau? Surround yourself with successful entrepreneurs. One cannot help but get motivation from their powerful presence.
  • Does your personal integrity need a boost? Hang out with quality people who have high standards for themselves and others. Your own standards will rise to meet them.
  • Is your life a bit too routine and stale? Find a stimulating lunch partner that seems a bit too crazy for you. Their wacky approach may help you design one of your own!
